While originally published in 1911, Scott Joplin’s ragtime opera “Treemonisha” wasn’t performed fully until 1972. Written in the popular romantic style of early 20th century opera, “Treemonisha” also features elements of black folk songs and dances, including spirituals, gospel, and even the blues. Driftwood Quintet’s original arrangement of the Overture to Treemonisha celebrates black music and culture while also bringing the district reed quintet sound to the forefront with a whimsical and charming piece that will elevate any chamber music program.
